Legend -
History - In the 15th century, the Era of the Ryukyu Kingdom began on Okinawa Island. Due to its geographical proximity to China, Okinawa suffered a great social, cultural and economic influence from the Chinese with whom it had most of its commercial relations, including the payment of tributes/taxes to the Chinese Government.
One of the cultural factors introduced by Chinese influence was Chinese Kenpo, which was brought to Okinawa by Chinese Martial Artists. Kenpo then exerted its influence on the traditional martial art practiced at the time in Okinawa, the "TI".
Ti was affected by the influence of Kenpo and developed into Ryukyu's Kenpo form becoming known as "TOUDI". Toudi was later developed in 3 styles, SHURI-TE, NAHA-TE and TOMARI-TE, evolving to become, in the mid-19th century, the KARATE of Okinawa.
Until the birth of KARATE, the styles that gave rise to it were passed from generation to generation, but without any organization or written discipline. Merely for the experience and the word that the young disciples were receiving from the elders.
In the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, only the children of the warrior class were secretly instructed with TODI in a hereditary way. Only one boy from each family was taught in each generation and it was not possible to teach outside the families, such was the importance and secrecy that were reserved for TODI.
In 1879, with the abolition of the medieval system and the creation of prefectures, the Kingdom of Ryukyu, Island of Okinawa, was annexed to Japan and Okinawa became a prefecture of the new Japan. Since then, Todi has been openly taught in Okinawa under the name of KARATE.
From 1900 onwards, KARATE began to be systematically taught in the primary schools of Okinawa, later spreading also to the Vocational and High Schools. The media gave their help, advertising KARATE as an Okinawan martial art, which resulted in an explosion of notoriety and interest on the part of the vast majority of the island's population.
One of the central figures of the exponential growth of KARATE in Okinawa was Gichin Funakoshi who is considered the Father of Karate, since he was the same who systematized and created the model that began to be taught in Okinawa schools and gave life to KARATE as the we know it today.

Lenda -
